
Through research we have been able to positively confirm 133 men that served in the ranks of Company A, 24th Virginia Infantry, otherwise known as 'The Floyd Riflemen'.

During the conflict a total of 10 men were Killed In Action.

Another 11 Floyd Riflemen died of wounds received in battle.

Over 50 men were Wounded In Action, some as many as three times!

30 members of the company died of various diseases

A further 9 men died as Prisoners Of War.
The Floyd Riflemen were formed on April 28th 1861 at Floyd in south-western Virginia by a local physician, 28 year old Calohill M. Stigleman. Below is a list of occupations for the original 80 Volunteers that made up the company;
Farmers - 41, Labourers - 9, Students - 9, Doctors - 3, Blacksmiths - 3, Lawyers - 2, Painter - 1, Clerk - 1, Deputy Sheriff - 1, Constable - 1, Barkeep - 1, Waggoner - 1, Mason - 1, Miller - 1, Salesman - 1, Stavemaker - 1, Overseer - 1, Tailor - 1, Sadler - 1.
The war for The Floyd Riflemen effectively ended at the battle of Five Forks on April 1st 1865 when all the shattered remnants of Company A were killed or captured.
Out of the original 80 enlistees that formed the company at Floyd County Courthouse in 1861 only three would make it through to that final battle in '65 - Champion Terrell Daniel, Isham B Shelor & Drummer Caleb Sowers - all of whom were captured at Five Forks.
